European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
