The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
