Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular rulings made by the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
